Institute of Communications and Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens (coordinator)

The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens is involved in CAROTID through the Biomedical Simulations and Imaging (BIOSIM) Laboratory. The BIOSIM laboratory was founded in 1999 and is involved in research, mainly in the following areas:

  • Medical applications and safety of electromagnetic fields
  • Biomedical signal/image processing and analysis
  • Neuroinformatics-Computational neuroscience
  • Bioinformatics
  • Semantic annotation on medical images
  • Simulation and modeling of complex biological/physiological processes
  • Computer aided diagnosis and treatment
  • Information systems and telematic applications in medicine

The BIOSIM laboratory is also responsible of, or is contributing in, teaching courses offered at both undergraduate (Microwaves, Medical Imaging and Medical Image Processing, Laboratory in Biomedical Engineering, Simulation of Physiological Systems) and postgraduate (Bioelectromagnetics, Theory and Applications of Bioelectromagnetism, Bioinformatics) level at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Currently the Laboratory consists of 30 people, 15 of which hold a Ph.D. degree and 14 are Ph.D. candidates. A number of 10-12 diploma theses are developed per year under the supervision of experienced staff. Over the last years the BIOSIM Laboratory has been involved in 30 European or National funded projects.

National & Kapodistrian University of Athens

The National & Kapodistrian University of Athens participates in CAROTID through the following departments of the Medical School:
Diagnostic Cytology - Department of clinical / laboratory studies, which consists of the following laboratories: Diagnostic Cytology, Analytical and Quantitative Cytology, Functional Cytology, Molecular Cytology, Cytogenetics and Tele-diagnostic Cytology
Vasular Surgery - Department of surgery, which includes the following units: Education and Research, Endovascular Surgery, Aneurysm, Cerebral Ischemia, Acute and chronic peripheral arterial disease, Veins and lymphatics, Intensive Care, Conservative treatment and angiography, Hemodynamics Laboratory Unit Study. In parallel with clinical work, the Vascular Surgery Department participates in international clinical trials (e.g. TAMARIS, RECOVER, REMEDY) and research programs (Kapodistrias I and II, Heraclitus), while it conducts research in collaboration with the Biomedical Center of the Academy of Athens.
Radiology II - Department of clinical / laboratory studies, which includes the following units: X-rays, angiography, CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, ultrasonography, Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology, Radiation, Radioisotopes, Radiotherapy. It has developed significant research activity mainly in a) Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Axial Tomography, X-Ray, Ultrasound, b) Interventional Radiology, c) Pediatric Radiology, d) Neuroradiology, e) Medical Physics - Radiation Physics and Dosimetry.

Vidavo operates in the field of personalized health (phealth) and e-wellness. Established by a group of experienced scientists with the aim to develop novel e-service solutions targeting the healthcare sector, Vidavo offers a unique combination of innovative solutions assisting citizens on-the-move and medical professionals to manage effectively health and wellness. Areas of expertise include: eHealth solutions, open platform development in line with European and international standards, eHealth policy, healthcards, eHealth interoperability, large-scale implementation and integration.
Vidavo has extensive experience in the implementation of national and pan-European research and commercial deployment projects and maintains close collaboration links with healthcare authorities, key market players, technology Brokers, telecommunications actors, and academic / research institutes via which new innovative products are being developed and know-how as well as experience are tested and exchanged. Regarding experience the following fields of activity are involved: integration of eHealth solutions, provision of technical expertise services to healthcare organizations and authorities, development of open platforms and software applications, in line with European and international standards, eHealth advisors at a policy level, Healthcards specs and roll out, eHealth interoperability advising and large-scale implementation integration.

Medical Imaging and Computer Vision Group (MAS VISION/GALEN )

The team MAS VISION / GALEN was founded at Ecole Centrale of Paris in November 2005, and became a member of INRIA Saclay-Ile-de-France in February 2008. Considering that recent developments on the hardware side have led to a new generation of scanners as well as image modalities where the in vivo visualization of anatomical structures of biological systems is possible in a non invasive fashion, the research activity of MAS VISION / GALEN focuses on understanding the anatomy of biological systems, and especially the effect of pathologies on their complex mechanisms of operation. Such in depth modeling and understanding of complex biological systems is an interdisciplinary effort which involves researchers with different scientific origins including physiology, biology, neurobiology, mathematics and engineering. Within such a context, MAS VISION/GALEN develops a unified framework consisting of three steps:

  • recovering a set of measures, anatomical and pathological indexes through the processing, understanding and exploitation of medical image modalities,
  • proposing a (parametric) mathematical model that is consistent with the anatomy and is capable of describing the operation of the organ/structure under consideration, and
  • estimating the parameters of the model such that it can reproduce the behavior observed/supported through the use of anatomical and pathological indexes.


Digimed-Evroiatriki Psychiko began its operations in December 2008, focusing mainly in providing diagnostic examinations for women and children. The center is located in a very prominent part of Athens, close to major public as well as private hospitals. In June 2011, Digimed-Evroiatriki Psychiko became the 12th center of Euromedic in Greece. The center currently provides a wide range of examinations operating three Ultrasound, one Digital Mammo and one Bone Densitometer. Recently, a laboratory department, as well as an advanced 1.5Τ MRI were added to the center.
Digimed-Evroiatriki Psychiko is a state of the art diagnostic center, aiming at providing high quality preventive and diagnostic examination services, carried out by qualified personnel, using state of the art equipment and innovative digital applications.A well-organized medical images and patient history archive is built through an innovative digital storage system, offering thus the possibility of comparison with the results of subsequent examinations. Evroiatriki Psychiko provides primary care services to patients affiliated to almost all public and private insurances.
